A guide to help older people avoid abuse, scam and fraud.

In November 2019, the Australian Bankers Association (ABA) released a guide and recommend that anyone over 50 years old should read it.

The guide was developed by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) Customer Advocate, together with a large range of community and academic experts.  Below are some extracts from the guide.

The guide will:

  1. Introduce the concept of elder financial abuse and explain why it matters to you
  2. Make sure you can recognise the types and signs of elder financial abuse
  3. Give you practical steps to safeguard yourself and your loved ones against potential abuse – now and in the future.

The guide describes that financial issues affecting older people are unique. Early preparation can avoid problems later.

We encourage all of our account holders in the target age group to download and read the document.

The guide can be downloaded from the ABA website.
